GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-MAT2-2N3
L4 · One whole from unit fractions; unit fractions of a set
Learning goal
“I can say how many unit fractions make 1 whole, and I can find 1 group of a set split into equal groups.”
One whole — all the parts put together: 4 fourths put together make one whole.
Set — a group of objects counted together, like 12 counters.
Group — one part of a set split into equal groups.
Equal groups — groups with the same number of objects in each group.
Worked example
How many fourths make 1 whole? Step 1: A fourth is 1 part of a whole split into 4 equal parts. Step 2: Count parts until the whole is back: 1 fourth, 2 fourths, 3 fourths, 4 fourths. Step 3: 4 fourths make 1 whole. The count you need is the same as the count of parts in the whole.
Check yourself — explain it
It takes 5 fifths to make 1 whole because:
Paired problem — example still visible
How many halves make 1 whole? -> 2 halves
Faded completion — last step is yours
"A whole is split into 7 equal parts. It takes ___ sevenths to make 1 whole." -> 7
