GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-MAT2-2N3
L1 · Equal parts: partitioning a whole
Learning goal
“I can tell if the parts of a whole are equal parts, and I can say how many equal parts a whole is split into.”
Whole — one full thing: one whole cake, one whole strip, one whole set.
Part — one piece of a whole.
Equal parts — parts that are all the same size.
Unequal parts — parts that are not all the same size.
Worked example
A paper strip is folded so the two ends meet. It is cut on the fold. Step 1: Count the parts: 2 parts. Step 2: Hold the parts together. They match - they are the same size. Step 3: Parts that are the same size are called equal parts.
Check yourself — explain it
The 2 parts are equal parts because:
Paired problem — example still visible
