GRADE 2 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-MAT2-N2
L2 · One sum, many ways: composing sums with two or more addends
Learning goal
“I can build the same sum in many ways, with two addends or with three or more, and I know that changing the order of the addends does not change the sum.”
Compose — to build a number from parts. We compose 14 from 7 and 7.
Addend — a number we add. A sum can have two, three, or more addends.
Sum — the answer to an addition. Every way in this lesson reaches the same sum.
Rearrange — to move addends into a new order. The sum stays the same.
Worked example
Make 14 with two addends. Way 1 - DOUBLE: 7 + 7 = 14. Way 2 - NEAR DOUBLE: 8 + 6 = 14. Way 3 - MAKE TEN: 10 + 4 = 14. Way 4: 9 + 5 = 14. Say it plainly: one sum can be composed in many ways. The parts change; the total stays 14.
Check yourself — explain it
Why can 14 be made in many ways?
Paired problem — example still visible
Write two ways to make 12 with two addends. -> 6 + 6 and 10 + 2 (any two correct pairs)
Faded completion — last step is yours
Make 16: 8 + ___ and 10 + ___ -> 8; 6
