L1 · Number facts: addends to 10 and related subtraction facts

Learning goal

“I can say addition facts with addends to 10 right away, and I can use an addition fact to answer its related subtraction facts.”

Addend — a number we add. In 7 + 5, the addends are 7 and 5.
Sum — the answer to an addition. In 7 + 5 = 12, the sum is 12.
Fact family — addition and subtraction facts that use the same three numbers, like 6 + 7 = 13 and 13 - 6 = 7.
Ten frame — a frame with 10 boxes in two rows of 5. Dots in the frame help us see facts.
Worked example

Add 8 + 5 on a ten frame. Step 1 - LOOK AT THE FRAME: 8 dots sit on the frame. 2 boxes are empty. Step 2 - MAKE TEN: move 2 of the 5 loose counters onto the frame. 8 + 2 = 10. Step 3 - ADD THE REST: 3 counters are still loose. 10 + 3 = 13. So 8 + 5 = 13. Making ten turns a hard fact into an easy one.

Check yourself — explain it

Why do we move 2 counters first in 8 + 5?

Paired problem — example still visible

9 + 6: move 1 counter to make 10, then add the rest. -> 9 + 1 = 10, then 10 + 5 = 15

Faded completion — last step is yours

7 + 6: 7 + 3 = 10, then 10 + ___ = ___ -> 3; 13
