Learning goal
“I can name a shape by counting its sides and corners.”
Side — one straight line that is part of a shape.
Corner — the place where two sides meet.
Square — a shape with 4 sides, all the same length, and 4 corners.
Circle — a round shape. It has no straight sides and no corners.
Worked example
A shape has 3 sides. The sides meet in 3 corners. Step 1: Count the sides: 3. Step 2: Count the corners: 3. Step 3: A shape with 3 sides and 3 corners is a triangle. One more: a shape has 4 sides, all the same length, and 4 corners. That is a square. Say it plainly: do not guess from how a shape looks. Count its sides and corners. The counts tell you its name.
