Grade 1 › G1U08 One-Half

GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1N3

L2 · One-half of a shape: two equal pieces

Learning goal

“I can split a shape into two equal pieces, and call one piece one-half.”

Piece — one part of a whole shape after it is split.
Fold — bend a shape so one side lands exactly on the other side.
Match — two pieces match when they are exactly the same size and cover each other.
Worked example

Take a rectangle made of paper. Fold it so the two sides land exactly on each other. Crease it, then cut on the fold. Now there are two pieces. Hold one on top of the other: they match exactly. Each piece is one-half of the rectangle. Say it plainly: one-half of a shape is one of two pieces that are the same size.

Check yourself — explain it

How do we know the pieces are halves?

Paired problem — example still visible

A circle is cut into two pieces that match exactly. What is each piece called? -> One-half of the circle

Faded completion — last step is yours

"Fold a square so the two pieces match. Each piece is one-___ of the square." -> half (one-half)
