GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1N3
L1 · One-half of a set: two equal groups (sets to 10)
Learning goal
“I can split a set into two equal groups, and call one group one-half.”
Whole set — all the objects we start with.
Equal groups — groups with the same number of objects in each.
One-half — one of two equal groups (or two equal pieces) of a whole.
Worked example
Share 8 counters into two equal groups. Deal them out one by one: 1 for this group, 1 for that group, until they are gone. The groups are 4 and 4. They match. One group of 4 is called one-half of 8. Say it plainly: one-half is one of two groups that are the same size: 4 + 4 = 8.
Check yourself — explain it
Why is 4 one-half of 8?
Paired problem — example still visible
Share 6 counters into two equal groups. How many in one-half? -> 3 (groups of 3 and 3; 3 + 3 = 6)
Faded completion — last step is yours
"10 counters in two equal groups: 5 and 5. One-half of 10 is ___" -> 5
