GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1N2
L2 · Counting back to subtract
Learning goal
“I can start at a number and count back on the number line to subtract.”
Count back — count down to take away.
Number line — a line of numbers in order.
Hop back — one jump to the number just before.
Worked example
11 - 3 on the number line. Start at 11. Hop back 3 times: 10, 9, 8. Land on 8. 11 - 3 = 8. Say it plainly: the first number tells where to stand. The second number tells how many hops back.
Check yourself — explain it
Each hop back takes away...
Paired problem — example still visible
