GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1N2
L1 · Subtracting: taking away and comparing within 20
Learning goal
“I can take away to find how many are left, and compare to find how many more.”
Subtract — to take away, or to compare two groups.
Difference — how many are left, or how many more.
Take away — move some out of a group.
Minus sign (-) — the sign that means subtract.
Worked example
12 dots sit on a mat. Cross out 4 dots. Count the dots that are left: 8. 12 - 4 = 8. The difference is 8. Say it plainly: subtracting can mean taking some away. What stays is the answer.
