GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1N1
L4 · Counting to 20: each number includes the ones before
Learning goal
“I can count to 20. I know each number holds all the numbers before it.”
Count on — start at a number and keep counting up.
Number line — a line with numbers in order, used to count.
Before — the number that comes just in front.
After — the number that comes just next.
Worked example
Start at 14. Count on: 14, 15, 16, 17. What number comes just after 16? Step 1: On the number line, each next hop is one more. Step 2: After 14 comes 15, then 16, then 17. Step 3: The number just after 16 is 17. Say it plainly: to count on, say the start number, then hop and say each next number.
Check yourself — explain it
When you count 15, which numbers did you already pass?
Paired problem — example still visible
