GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1N1

L1 · Showing quantities: objects, pictures and numerals

Learning goal

“I can show a number with objects, with a picture, and with a numeral.”

Numeral — the written sign for a number, like 7.
Count — say the number words in order, one for each thing.
Ten frame — a box with 10 spaces, 5 on top and 5 on the bottom.
Picture — a drawing that shows how many.
Worked example

A ten frame has dots in all 5 top boxes and in 2 bottom boxes. How many dots are there? Step 1: Touch each dot and say one number word: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 on top. Step 2: Keep counting on the bottom: 6, 7. Step 3: The last word said is 7. There are 7 dots. The numeral is 7. Say it plainly: one word for each dot, and the last word tells how many.
