Grade 8 › G8U04 Algebra: Powers & Monomials

GRADE 8 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G8-8A1

L4 · Powers and Monomials Clinic

Learning goal

“I can move fluently among all of 8A1's skills - unfolding and folding terms, evaluating powers inside terms, classifying and ordering polynomials, justifying whether an expression is a polynomial, and combining like monomials - and check my work by substitution.”

Justify — to prove a claim using the definition, not by appearance: "it is a polynomial BECAUSE every exponent is a natural number."
Clinic set — a mixed set where the first skill is deciding WHICH tool each item needs before computing anything.
Worked example

Run the full checklist on 9x² - 4x + 1. Step 1: Polynomial? Exponents on the variable are 2, 1, and 0 (the constant) - all natural numbers; coefficients 9, -4, 1 are real. YES, it is a polynomial. Step 2: Terms: three - a trinomial. Degrees: 2, 1, 0 - the polynomial's degree is 2, so it is quadratic. It is already in conventional descending order. Step 3: Contrast: 3√x - 2 is NOT a polynomial: √x is x raised to the power 1/2, which is not a natural number. The checklist, not the look of the expression, decides.

Check yourself — explain it

Why does the justification for 9x² - 4x + 1 mention exponents at all?

Paired problem — example still visible

Run the checklist on 7x³ - 2: polynomial? classification? degree? -> Yes (exponents 3 and 0 are natural); binomial; degree 3 (cubic)

Faded completion — last step is yours

"x⁶ - 4x² has degrees 6 and 2, so its degree is 6, and with two terms it is a ___" -> binomial
