L4 · Choosing the Unit; Measurement Problem Solving

Learning goal

“I can choose whether cm2, m2, or km2 is the appropriate unit for a given area and justify my choice, estimate an area using a 1 cm2 or 1 m2 benchmark, convert between m2 and cm2, and solve problems that mix perimeter and area.”

Appropriate unit — the unit whose size suits the thing being measured, so the number is easy to picture: cm2 for small flat objects, m2 for rooms and yards, km2 for parks, cities and lakes.
Benchmark — a known area you compare against to estimate: 1 cm2 is about a fingernail or postage stamp; 1 m2 is about a large beach towel, or one big floor tile.
Estimate — a reasoned "about" answer found by comparing with a benchmark, not by exact measurement.
Convert — to restate the same area in a different unit (for example, 3 m2 = 30 000 cm2) without changing the area itself.
Worked example

Choose the unit for the area of a notebook cover. Step 1: Size picture: a notebook cover is a small flat object - bigger than a stamp, far smaller than a room. Step 2: In cm2: a cover 30 cm by 20 cm has area 600 cm2 - a friendly number. Step 3: In m2 the same cover is 0.06 m2 - awkward; in km2 it is hopeless. So cm2 is the appropriate unit, BECAUSE the object is hand-sized and cm2 gives a whole number you can picture. Say it plainly: the rule for choosing is "pick the unit that makes the number easy to picture." Small flat things -> cm2. Rooms, floors, yards, fields -> m2. Parks, towns, lakes, farms -> km2.

Check yourself — explain it

The area of a school gymnasium floor is best expressed in...

Paired problem — example still visible

The area of a city park -> km2 (land-sized; a park can cover several km2, and m2 would give a number in the millions)

Faded completion — last step is yours

"The area of a sticky note: choose ___, because it is a small flat object about the size of a few fingernails" -> cm2
