Grade 5 › G5U07 Ratios

GRADE 5 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G5-5N7

L3 · Ratios in context: clinic

Learning goal

“I can read a real situation, decide whether it asks for a part-to-part or a part-to-whole ratio, and write the relationship as a ratio, fraction, decimal, or percent as asked.”

Ratio — a comparison of two quantities in a specific situation, written with a colon.
Part-to-part ratio — one part compared to another part (flour to eggs).
Part-to-whole ratio — one part compared to everything counted together (boys to all singers).
Percent — a part-whole ratio out of 100 (13 out of 25 = 52%).
Worked example

A drink mix uses 3 scoops of powder and 7 glasses of water. Question 1: ratio of powder to water -> part-to-part: 3 : 7. Question 2: ratio of powder to the whole drink -> first build the whole: 3 + 7 = 10, then part-to-whole: 3 : 10. Say it plainly: the words after "to" decide the second number. "To water" = the other part. "To the whole" = add everything first.

Check yourself — explain it

Why did the second number change from 7 to 10 between the two questions?

Paired problem — example still visible

A trail mix has 5 handfuls of nuts and 3 handfuls of raisins. Write the ratio of raisins to the whole mix -> 3 : 8 (whole = 5 + 3)

Faded completion — last step is yours

"A class has 11 students with hats and 9 without. The ratio of students with hats to all students is 11 : ___" -> 20
