GRADE 4 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G4-4N6

L2 · Fraction, decimal, percent: the same relationship three ways

Learning goal

“I can name the same part-whole relationship as a fraction, a decimal, and a percent - and switch between the three names.”

Convert — to rename a number in another form without changing its value (fraction, decimal, percent).
Equivalent — naming the same amount: equivalent names share one point on the number line.
Part-whole relationship — how a part compares with its whole, like 3 parts out of 4 equal parts.
Worked example

Name 7/10 as a decimal and as a percent. Step 1: Get to hundredths first - the percent's home. Partition: 7/10 = 70/100 (each tenth cut into 10 hundredths; factor 10). Step 2: As a decimal, 70/100 = 0.70, which we write 0.7. Step 3: As a percent, 70 out of 100 is 70%. One relationship, three names: 7/10 = 0.7 = 70%. Model all three, together: a tenth strip with 7 of 10 shaded; the same amount as 70 small squares of the hundred grid; and the point 0.7 on the pre-segmented 0-2 number line, labelled with all three names. The point never moves.

Check yourself — explain it

When 7/10 was renamed as 70%, did the amount change?

Paired problem — example still visible

Name 40/100 as a decimal and as a percent. -> 0.4 (0.40); 40%

Faded completion — last step is yours

"3/10 in hundredths: 3 x 10 = 30, so 3/10 = 30/100 = 0.3 = ___%." -> 30%
