GRADE 4 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G4-4N4

L1 · Number Facts to 12; Patterns in Multiplying/Dividing by 10, 100, 1000

Learning goal

“I can recall multiplication and division facts with factors up to 12, flip a multiplication fact into its related division facts, and use the patterns when I multiply or divide by 10, 100 and 1000.”

Product — the result of a multiplication. In 7 x 8 = 56, the product is 56.
Quotient — the result of a division. In 56 / 7 = 8, the quotient is 8.
Fact family — the multiplications and divisions that share the same three numbers: 7 x 8 = 56, 8 x 7 = 56, 56 / 7 = 8, 56 / 8 = 7.
Pattern — a change that happens the same way every time. x 10, x 100 and x 1000 move every digit 1, 2 and 3 places to the left.
Worked example

Start with one fact: 7 x 8 = 56. The same three numbers give a whole family: 8 x 7 = 56 (turnaround), 56 / 7 = 8 and 56 / 8 = 7. Learn ONE fact well and you own FOUR. Division is not a new mountain - it is multiplication read backwards: "56 / 7 = ?" is just asking "7 x ? = 56." The facts to know cold now run to 12 x 12: the new ones past Grade 3 are the 11s and 12s and the harder 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s (7 x 8 = 56, 8 x 9 = 72, 9 x 9 = 81, 12 x 7 = 84, 12 x 9 = 108, 12 x 12 = 144).

Knowing 9 x 6 = 54 tells me 54 / 9 = 6 because...

Paired problem — example still visible

Write the two divisions in the family of 9 x 6 = 54. -> 54 / 9 = 6 and 54 / 6 = 9.

Faded completion — last step is yours

"Family of 12 x 4 = 48: 48 / 12 = ___ and 48 / 4 = ___." -> 4; 12
