L1 · Angles in the world: corners, bends, turns, intersections, slopes
“I can find angles all around me - in corners, bends, turns, intersections, and slopes - and I can say which of two openings is the greater angle.”
Look at a pair of scissors. Step 1: Two blades meet at the screw in the middle. Step 2: The space between the blades is an opening - and that opening is an angle. Step 3: Open the scissors just a crack - the angle is small. Open them wide - the angle is greater. The blades did not change; the OPENING did. The same idea hides in still things: the corner of a book is an angle (two edges meet and make an opening), and so is the bend in a straw. Say it plainly: an angle is an opening where two arms meet. Nothing has to move for an angle to be there.
The corner of a table is an angle because...
Two pencils are laid with their ends touching, spread apart like an open book. Where is the angle? -> In the opening between the two pencils (spread them wider and the angle is greater)
"A book opened a tiny bit shows a ___ angle. The same book opened wide shows a ___ angle" -> small; greater
