L4 · Fractions on the number line, 0 to 1; benchmarks 0, 1/2 and 1
“I can place fractions on a number line from 0 to 1 by counting unit-fraction steps, and I can tell whether a fraction is close to 0, close to 1/2, or close to 1.”
A number line from 0 to 1 is the length of ONE whole. Split the space from 0 to 1 into 4 equal spaces - the same split as a strip in fourths. The end of each space gets a tick. Now count unit fractions from 0: after 1 space you are at 1/4; after 2 spaces, 2/4; after 3 spaces, 3/4; after 4 spaces you reach 4/4, which is exactly the point 1. Every fraction is a POINT on this line. To place a fraction, split the line by its denominator and count steps of its unit fraction.
On this line, why does the tick for 3/4 sit three spaces from 0?
A line from 0 to 1 is split into 5 equal spaces. The third tick from 0 is ___ -> 3/5
"A line split into 8 equal spaces: counting from 0, the ticks are 1/8, 2/8, ..., and the last tick before 1 is ___." -> 7/8
