L2 · Multiplication as repeated addition and skip counting

Learning goal

“I can find a product by adding the same number over and over, or by skip counting on a number line. Multiplication is the shortcut for both.”

Repeated addition — adding the same number again and again: 4 + 4 + 4 is 3 groups of 4, added out longhand.
Skip counting — counting by a fixed step: by 2s, by 5s, by 3s. Each count lands on the next group total.
Multiple — a number you land on when skip counting: 6, 12 and 18 are multiples of 6.
Jump — one step on a number line. Equal jumps of 4 draw multiplication as a trip: 0, 4, 8, 12...
Worked example

Find 6 x 4. As repeated addition: 6 groups of 4 -> 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4. Add in pairs: 4 + 4 = 8; 8 + 4 = 12; 12 + 4 = 16; 16 + 4 = 20; 20 + 4 = 24. On the number line, the same work is 6 jumps of 4: 0 -> 4 -> 8 -> 12 -> 16 -> 20 -> 24. The last landing is the product: 24.

Check yourself — explain it

Each jump on the number line stands for...

Paired problem — example still visible

5 x 6 as repeated addition: 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 30

Faded completion — last step is yours

"7 x 3 as jumps of 3: 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, ___ - the seventh jump lands on the product" -> 21
