Grade 3 › G3U02 Money: Counting Coins & Bills

GRADE 3 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G3-3N1

L2 · Counting loonies, toonies and bills: the value in dollars

Learning goal

“I can count loonies, toonies and bills, say the total in dollars, and write it the English way, with the dollar sign first.”

Loonie — the $1 coin. It has a loon on it.
Toonie — the $2 coin, with a silver rim and a gold centre.
Bill — paper money. Canadian bills come in $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100.
Dollar sign ($) — the symbol for dollars. In English it is written before the number: $8.
Worked example

Count 3 toonies and 2 loonies. Step 1 (toonies by 2s): 2, 4, 6. Step 2 (loonies by 1s, keep going): 7, 8. The total is $8 — English writes the dollar sign first.

Check yourself — explain it

We count the toonies before the loonies because...

Paired problem — example still visible

Count 4 toonies and 1 loonie -> $9 (2, 4, 6, 8, then 9)

Faded completion — last step is yours

"2 toonies and 3 loonies: 2, 4, then 5, 6, ___" -> $7
