L3 · Measuring in centimetres
“I can measure length in centimetres: I tile or iterate centimetre units, and I read a ruler by starting at 0 and reading the mark at the other end.”
Sara measures her crayon with centimetre cubes. Each cube is exactly 1 centimetre long. Step 1: She tiles the cubes end to end along the crayon, no gaps, no overlaps. Step 2: She counts the cubes at the other end: 9 cubes. Step 3: She says the measure both ways: the crayon is 9 cubes long, and the crayon is 9 centimetres (9 cm) long. Say it plainly: a centimetre is a unit like a clip - but its size never changes. It is the same size in every classroom, in every town.
Why can two students in different towns both say the crayon is 9 cm?
Tom tiles a sticker with centimetre cubes. He counts 5 cubes. How long is the sticker? -> 5 cm
"A worm is tiled with centimetre cubes. It takes 7 cubes. The worm is ___ cm long." -> 7
