L1 · Cubes, spheres and cylinders

Learning goal

“I can name a cube, a sphere, and a cylinder by feeling its flat and curved parts.”

Face — one flat part of an object.
Flat — smooth and level, like the top of a table.
Curved — bent and round, not flat.
Roll — to move by turning over and over.
Worked example

First object: it has 6 faces. Every face is flat, and every face is a square. Step 1: Count the faces: 6. Step 2: Ask: are the faces flat or curved? All flat. Step 3: An object with 6 flat faces, all squares, is a cube. A cube slides; it does not roll. Second object: it is round all over. It has no flat faces at all. It is a sphere. A sphere rolls. Say it plainly: feel the parts. Flat faces or round all over - that tells you the name.

Check yourself — explain it

Why can a sphere roll?

Paired problem — example still visible

Which object can roll: a cube or a sphere? -> A sphere

Faded completion — last step is yours

"A sphere has no flat faces, so it can ___" -> roll
