L5 · Number facts clinic: addends to 10 and their subtraction partners

Learning goal

“I can say addition facts with addends to 10 fast, and say their subtraction partners.”

Partner fact — the subtraction fact that belongs with an addition fact. 7 + 3 = 10 has partners 10 − 3 = 7 and 10 − 7 = 3.
Recall — say the answer fast, without counting.
Subtraction partner — taking the whole apart again: the whole take away one part gives the other part.
Worked example

Recall: 7 + 3 = 10. Now say its partners without counting: 10 − 3 = 7 and 10 − 7 = 3. One fact learned, three facts known: the whole is 10, the parts are 7 and 3, and taking the whole apart gives a part back.

Check yourself — explain it

Why is 10 − 3 = 7?

Paired problem — example still visible

4 + 6 = 10. What is 10 − 6? -> 4 (the partner gives back the other part)

Faded completion — last step is yours

"8 + 2 = 10, so 10 − 2 = ___" -> 8
