GRADE 1 · ALBERTAOUTCOME AB-G1-1N2
L3 · Making tens
Learning goal
“I can make a ten first to add two numbers, and then add what is left.”
Make a ten — move counters to fill a ten frame first. A full ten is easy to add.
Move over — take a counter from one group and put it with the other group.
Left over — what remains in the group after some counters move over.
Worked example
Add 9 + 4. Use make-a-ten. Step 1: Put 9 counters in a frame. The frame needs 1 more to be full. Step 2: Move 1 counter over from the 4. Now the frame is full: 10. The other group has 3 left. Step 3: Add: 10 + 3 = 13. So 9 + 4 = 13. Model: two groups described in words - a frame with 9, a pile of 4; one counter moves; a full ten and 3 left over.
Check yourself — explain it
Why do we move 1 counter to the 9?
Paired problem — example still visible
Add 9 + 5 with make-a-ten. -> Move 1: 10 + 4 = 14
Faded completion — last step is yours
