L7 · Measurement Clinic

Learning goal

“I can move through a mixed measurement problem - choosing units, converting with provided factors, applying perimeter or circumference, and checking reasonableness - without being told which tool to use first.”

Clinic set — a mixed practice set where the first skill is recognizing WHICH tool the problem needs; no labels, like real work.
Reasonableness check — the final step of every problem in this unit: compare the answer to a referent or an estimate before accepting it.
Worked example

"A bedroom is 4 m by 3.5 m. Baseboards are fitted to all walls except a 0.9 m door opening. How many metres of baseboard?" Triage: asked for metres; all data already in metres - no conversion. Tool: perimeter with an adjustment. P = 2(4 + 3.5) = 15 m; minus the door: 15 - 0.9 = 14.1 m. Reasonableness: four walls of a small bedroom are about 15 m.

Check yourself — explain it

Why is "which units, and are they consistent?" the first question, before "which formula?"

Paired problem — example still visible

Third side of a triangle with perimeter 30 in and two sides 11 in and 8 in -> 11 in (30 - 11 - 8)

Faded completion — last step is yours

"2.5 yd -> in: 2.5 x 36 = ___ in" -> 90 in
